OSSOL is the proprietary product of EH Florance PTY Ltd. Sydney, Australia, and is manufactured here in New Zealand by Greyhorse Veterinary (NZ) Ltd.
OSSOL is indicated as a supplement to the diet of (a) pregnant and lactating bitches. (b) young and growing puppies (especially when milk is in short supply) and (c) an aid in the treatment of Calcium deficiencies in dogs.
OSSOL is a solution, or syrup of soluble Calcium salts together with Vitamins for the treatment of Calcium deficiency disorders in dogs, such as Osteomalacia, Eclampsia, and including the range of problems associated with poor Calcium uptake in bone structure or weak muscle tissue or hair growth. Being a solution it is instantly absorbed into the bloodstream of the dog.
The average requirement of Calcium in dogs is as follows: *

OSSOL contains 90 mgm of Calcium per 5 ml dose. Normal dogs rations provide generally between 70 to 90% of the above required Calcium levels. Wet meat and or tinned food tend to generally have low Calcium levels, dry dog food tends to have higher levels.
Dose rates for the administration of OSSOL are detailed as follows on the label of each bottle.

If feeding combinations of the above apportion appropriately. In cases where Osteomalacia or Eclampsia is an issue, please follow the revised dose rates as prescribed by your Vet Surgeon. Some dogs, particularly those subject to high work loads eg: sporting or working, hunting or racing dogs may require supplemented rates to those detailed above. Consult your Vet Surgeon for revised rates.
The need for Calcium supplementation is well recognised by all dog owners and breeders. Most traditional dog rations have a short fall of Calcium. Fresh meat is particularly lacking in this mineral. Commercially prepared dry food is very considerably less so. Wet tinned food frequently falls between the two. A dog fed a straight all dry feed should be receiving a balanced diet. A combination of mix of wet or tinned and dry feed tends to throw the Calcium balance into a negative phase. Please refer to the dose labels or as set out opposite.
A word here on the use of OSSOL in cases of Eclampsia. A frequent problem in some dogs, particularly smaller breeds, Eclampsia can be a frightening problem. If your bitch has a history of this disorder or you suspect could develop it, we suggest the following routine. Cease supplementation of Calcium, whatever material you are using at least three weeks before whelping. Begin dosing with OSSOL at the optimum level immediately after whelping. Any added Calcium just prior to whelping tends to depress the natural accumulation of Calcium, which in turn will tend to increase the possibility of the onset of ‘Milk Fever’ or Eclampsia.
OSSOL is available in three sizes. 250ml,1 litre and bulk 20 litres

For the treatment of ECLAMPSIA [Milk Fever, Hypocalcaemia] in Cats.
Eclampsia is an acute, life threatening disease caused by low blood calcium. A lactating queen is especially susceptible to blood calcium depletion because of milk production. Cats with milk fever lack the ability to quickly move calcium into their milk without depleting their own blood levels of this mineral.
Eclampsia most commonly occurs 1-3 weeks after giving birth. Litters do not need to be large to cause eclampsia. the kittens themselves are not affected as the mother's milk appears to be normal.
Eclampsia is a very serious disorder, but the symptoms are very easy to recognize. A lactating queen can very suddenly begin walking with a stiff gait. It may even wobble and appear disorientated. She may become so stiff that she is unable to walk. She will appear to have a high fever with a high temperature. Her breathing will increase dramatically, as if she is having an 'asthma' attack. At that point death can occur if treatment is not given quickly.
Lactating queens can be treated for Eclampsia by administering Ossol for Cats over the cats daily food. Dose rate is 4ml (one capful) per kilo of wet meat, or as directed by a vet surgeon.
caution: It is important not to give calcium supplement to pregnant queens.
Over-supplementation of calcium in early pregnancy will actually increase the risk of eclampsia once the kittens are born. A cat constantly is storing calcium in her bones. When lactating, calcium is removed from the bones to provide milk. This process if regulated naturally by the parathyroid gland. If a queen receives large amounts of calcium during pregnancy, this parathyroid gland decreases the amount of hormone released. Immediately after birth there is an increase demand for calcium which the cat's body is unable to supply, thus blood calcium levels drop, and the symptoms of eclampsia appear.
Ossol for Cats is a palatable solution of soluble Calcium salts, formulated specifically to treat Eclampsia on nursing cats.
Ossol for Cats contains 20mg of Calcium per 1ml.
